Our team at work

Jack Scully, a member of our Technical Committee, and Wilson Jimenez, a city employee and co-owner of Arrow Four Services LLC and one of our advisors, took charge of installing the eight anti-glare shields and blue light filters late last week for our demonstration project at Rocky Vista University.

Kari Jimenez, Wilson’s wife and business partner, took a lot of photos of the installation and didn’t catch any mishaps. Nobody fell out of the bucket, so the team maintains a spotless safety record.

Local businesses jump in to help

Two art galleries approached us at our information table during last weekend’s Kayenta Street Painting Festival offering to help get the word out by displaying our brochures about outdoor lighting health and safety issues in their galleries. They are Datura Gallery and Gallery 873.

Red Mountain Resort was already supporting our efforts with free meeting space, but the offer by the galleries got us thinking: Shouldn’t we be asking businesses in Ivins to help get our message out?

Events Committee members Lois Diehl and Tim Povlick got things started by printing out some posters and approaching businesses. In the past week alone, they along with Events Committee members Chris Haddad, Sally Tom, and board members Kai Reed and Sue Gordhammer approached other businesses that were glad to help. They are either displaying brochures and/or posters now, or will as soon as we get them printed and delivered.

Here are businesses that have agreed to help get our message out:

  • Aragosta Restaurant
  • Datura Gallery
  • IBB Cyclery & Multisport
  • Ice Box & Roundabout Grill
  • Ivins Barber Shop
  • Gallery 873
  • Kayenta Homes & Properties
  • Lightfoot’s Market
  • Mystic Canyon Light Gallery
  • Red Mountain Market
  • Sacred Space Spa
  • Troy’s Custom Body & Paint
  • Tuacahn Center for the Performing Arts
  • Xetava Gardens Cafe
  • Zia Pottery Studio

Red Mountain Resort supports our mission by providing us with conference space and audio visual equipment for events. Even the Santa Clara Library is helping by displaying a poster about our Initiative. Plus, the lobby at Ivins City Hall displays a poster about the Initiative’s work and mission along with information brochures.

If you don’t see an Ivins business listed here, it’s probably only because we haven’t asked them yet. The positive response has been overwhelming.

If you have a business in Ivins, or know someone who does, let us know if you are willing to help by displaying a poster about our Initiative and/or brochures about outdoor lighting and lighting issues, and endorsement cards.

Or, if you have a business in Ivins but you don’t have clients coming to your premises, displaying a poster or brochures isn’t practical. In that case, we would appreciate if you could let us know that you support our mission.

And, if you would like to join a tremendous group of volunteers, just send us a note from the Contact us page.

Welcome New Board Members

The Ivins Night Sky Initiative is excited to announce the addition of two new Board members, Sue Gordhammer and Kai Reed. Both have made significant contributions to our community through their involvement in other organizations and they are passionate about our mission.

Mission

To educate and inform on improving, preserving, and protecting the night sky over Ivins Utah and our heritage of dark skies through environmentally responsible outdoor lighting, and to serve as a resource for City officials, residents, and businesses.

Kai Reed – Director & Vice President

Kai has been involved with grassroots advocacy in southern Utah since she first moved to Ivins in 1998. She was the Administrative Director of Citizens for Dixie’s Future (now Conserve Southwest Utah), a local citizen’s advocacy group focusing on smart growth and sustainability issues. In 2011 she was one of the founding board members of Friends of Snow Canyon State Park dedicated to protecting and preserving the Park and in 2012 she helped create the Southern Utah Bicycle Alliance which works to make cycling safe and enjoyable for all cycling enthusiasts. She’s now very excited to be working with the Ivins Night Sky Initiative with the goal of achieving the International Dark Sky Community Designation.

Sue Gordhammer – Director & Secretary

Sue has been a dark sky advocate since her first canyoneering trip in the San Rafael Swell 20 years ago.   The incredible image of the night sky without any artificial light is still seared in her mind.  Sue is an avid hiker and mountain biker and enjoys getting out on the trails with family, friends, and her dogs as often as possible.  She made Ivins her home in 2017.  One of the primary reasons she chose to live in Kayenta is because of how the community embraces dark sky principals and she wants to ensure that all of Ivins can enjoy the beauty of the night sky.

… but wait, there’s more

In addition to expanding our Board, we are expanding our team of advisors and volunteers, starting with a meeting on Wednesday March 6th. You are invited. Click here for more information.

If you can’t attend this week’s meeting but you would like to get involved, please let us know using our Contact Us page.

Invitation to a Meeting

We are having a meeting on Wednesday, March 6th from 1 to 3pm at our house to get three events for the Ivins Night Sky Initiative off the ground.

We need help with ideas for the events, planning them, the best ways to promote them, and help at the actual events.

The events are:

  • Our participation in the Kayenta Street Painting Festival (April 27-28)
  • Setting up a star-gazing party for kids and families and others interested
  • Planning an entertaining and informative presentation on dark sky issues and safety and how to get involved.

Please RSVP using the Contact Us page if you will attend.

If you would like to bring a friend, let us know their name and email and we will be glad to send an invitation.

Thanks.
